VH-AMJ
(2) de
Havilland D.H.87B Hornet Moth
(c/n 8066)
This was the former G-ADMJ imported in
1952. It also saw service with the RAF as a
communications
aircraft carrying the serial W9389. My shot above was
taken at Moorabbin
in
1956. Color scheme was blue and white. The shot
below, from the Geoff Goodall coll-
ection was taken some six years later in May 1962, when the aircraft
was owned by Hearn's
Hobbies,
a popular model store in Flinders Street, Melbourne.
The Hearns
family were
flying
enthusiasts, both gliding and powered. The photo at the
foot of the page is from the
CAHS
archives and shows -AMJ probably in the early 1950s. The
Hornet Moth was
withdrawn from use in 1972 and, following a healthy restoration,
re-entered the register as
VH-AFJ in February 1976.
It was still until
about 1985. Its current
status is unknown,
although I believe it might still be languishing
in a shed in the Caloundra area..
