VH-AKR Douglas
DC-3CS1C3G (c/n 12647)
Built as a Douglas
C-47A-5-DK for the USAAF in 1944 as 42-92806, VH-AKR was civilianized
as a DC-3 as G-AJTO before going to Australian
National Airways as VH-INF. It was sold to Butler
Air Transport in 1950 and
re-registered out of the ANA series. In 1957 it was sold to
Mandated
Airlines as VH-MAN
and spent the rest of its life
in New Guinea, winding up in the Air Nuigini fleet
as P2-MAN. My shot was taken at Mascot in the
early 1950s when it was possible to stroll onto
the departure tarmac and take photographs as the
aircraft taxied away for take off. Try that today!
