(1) CAC CA6
Wackett Trainer (c/n 353)
Two Hundred
Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation CA6 Wackett Trainers were built for
the
RAAF in the early
years of WW II. In addition there were two prototypes, model
numbered
CA2. The Wackett was named after its designer, Sir Lawrence
Wackett, and was a docile
trainer with excellent flying manners. Originally designed to be
powered by a de Havilland Gipsy
Six,
shortages of this engine dictated that all 200 were fitted with Warner
Super Scarabs of some
165 hp
output. At the end of the war, forty-six were relinquished into
the civilian market, where
they made excellent
aero club follow-on trainers from the Tiger Moth.
The
above photograph of VH-AFB, although a poor shot, (and sans tail wheel)
illustrates one
of the first Wackett Trainers to appear
on the civil register, being duly registered as airworthy
in October 1945. It was formerly with
the RAAF as A3-119. Another, older vintage photo
of it (expertly restored by Barry
Maclean) appears below. However, for modellers or those
viewers seeking
a better Wackett photograph, see VH-AGP.
Finally, the shot at the foot of the
page by Barrie Colledge shows -AFB at Morrabbin in 1954.
